How to Get the Most Out of Your Venison Meat

How to Get the Most Out of Your Venison Meat

Few things are more gratifying than enjoying tasty meat that came from an animal you hunted. That gratifying feeling is as old as humanity, and for whatever reason, meat just tastes better and seems more filling when you hunted it yourself just like your ancestors once did, versus running to the grocery store or butcher shop.

One of the best and most popular animals to hunt and eat are deer. With that in mind, here are three tips on how to properly care for and cook your venison.

  1. Be cognizant of what you do in the field. More specifically, have a plan of how you will remove the meat and have the deer dressed, then make sure the meat gets to an optimal temperature as soon as possible. Moreover, do your best to remove everything around the muscle, as this will help improve your venison’s tenderness.
  2. Don’t overcook it. Sure, there are some people who like well done meat, but for most of us, when we order a steak, it’s medium, medium rare or rare. And in regards to venison, you want to make sure you avoid overcooking it as it will become gamey and extra chewy, rather than perfectly tender off the knife.
  3. Experiment with flavor enhancers. Whether you’re using a rub or some sort of marinade, using the right kind flavor enhancer will make the venison tenderer and tastier. At the very least, add some salt and pepper and olive oil to bring out the meat’s best.

Those are just three examples of things you can do to improve the taste of your venison? What do you do to get the most out of your venison score?
